   revolutionary
   Born in Nanterre, François Hanriot was, at the time of the revolution of 1789, the leader of the sansculotte groups during the Revolutionary Day of August 10, 1792, and took part in the September massacres of that year. Named provisional general commander of the Parisian National Guard (May 1793), he directed the sans-culotte and Hébertist (see hebert, jacques-rené) riots against the National Convention, causing in turn the elimination of the popular Girondin leadership (May 31-June 2, 1793). Although connected to the ultrarevolu-tionary Hébertists, he was not condemned with them (March 1794), but was arrested and guillotined at the same time as maximilien Robespierre and his supporters (9-10 Thermidor Year II, July 27-28, 1794).
